Trip Report December 28, 2002 thru January 5,2003

Let me begin by describing how this trip came about.  On the trip returning home from visiting both of our elderly parents, my wife mentioned that being a school teacher, she had two full weeks off for Christmas vacation.  I don't know what prompted it, but I asked her what she would like to do if we were to go on a winter vacation.  She responded with a couple of ideas and I countered with thought of something more exotic.  During the remainder of the drive we discussed some of the options I had in mind, not even thinking about something like Hedo.  When we arrived home after a seven-hour drive, we got on the Internet and began checking out some options.  As we proceeded, we decided it would be some place warm and that neither of us was interested in a cruise.

Our search didn't go well.  Either we couldn't find flights or a resort that looked interesting didn't have openings in our time frame.  We contacted Yahoo and Expedia travel to no avail.  Our excitement was beginning to fade.  The following day being Monday, I told my wife I would check with the travel agent who does my travel plans for work.  I called my contact at the travel agent first thing on Monday and she just sighed.  She explained that there were very few flights open during this time.

She offered to do some checking and she called me back a couple hours later.  She explained that there was almost nothing to choose from, but she had found this resort in Jamaica that a tour operator had.  It was for a 1 week at an all inclusive.  When she read the description to me, initially it didn't sound too bad and I got the resorts WEB page.  After looking at the description, I wasn't enthused.   It was a family resort, limited ocean beach access, three pools, and no activities.  It also bragged that it was family friendly.  Not that I dislike kids (we have two grown children and two grandkids) but it didn't thrill me.  Anyway, I called the travel agent back and expressed my thoughts.  She said there really wasn't much of anything to choose from.  Then she in an off handed remark mentioned Hedonism.

Having seen and read titillating tidbits about Hedonism, I asked which one.  She said Hedonism III.  I asked her how the rates compared.  Hedonism III was considerably more expensive.  I told the travel agent I would get back to her the next day.

When I got home that night, I shared with my wife the first resort.  We pulled it up on the Internet.  I shared with her my thoughts.  We both agreed that this resort wouldn't be much more fun that going to a hotel locally.  Then I mentioned Hedonism option.  To my surprise, I didn't get a resounding no.  We searched for info on the Internet and discovered the DennyP page.  As we read trip reports we were thinking this is too good to be true.  Everyone seemed to have just loved Hedo III.  We discussed the options and came to a conclusion.  I was to call the travel agent.  If there wasn't any other options that were more appealing, it was Hedo III or nothing at all.

One topic of discussion between my wife and I was, could all the people who went to Hedo III be that enthused about their trip.  Where were the trip reports of those who didn't enjoy themselves?  Could DennyP be not posting them?  We didn't know what to make of it.  Not only did the first time attendees seem to enjoy themselves, but also there were many repeat attendees.  We also took heart to those who said Hedo III was what you made it.

On Tuesday morning, I called the travel agent and asked if she had found anything else.  She informed me that she hadn't.  I explained that if that was the case, my wife and I had decided on HedoIII.  She asked me if I knew what this resort was about.  I answered that I did.  She commented that a couple from the conservative Midwest might not want to go to such a place.  I assured he that we did. She asked me if I really wanted to take my bride to such a place and how she would feel about going there.  I explained that my wife was in agreement.

The rest is history.  We booked the trip and began planning during the few short weeks before we left.  To make the time even shorter for me, I travel for work and I was gone on a business trip during the two full weeks before Christmas.  Anyway, we got things together.  Made togas and planned for PJ night.  We were to say the least very excited and v e r y nervous about the trip.  Christmas plans with our children, their spouses, and grandkids took a little edge off of our nervousness.
Sunday morning finally came.  We headed to the airport where our tour group chartered from.  We saw a lot of people and we wondered if any of them were going where we were.  It turned out there were three or four flights leaving from the same gate area at about the same time.  The Boeing 727 was full.  Again we wondered if any of these people were going to HedoIII.  I don't remember who started it, but I was visiting with a lady in the seat next to me.  She was traveling with her husband and three grown children.  They were going to Breezes.  She asked where we were going and I told her.  No reaction from her and at the time, thankfully no questions.

After a 4 ½ hour flight, we arrived at Montego Bay.  I think it was a lot to do with our excitement and anticipation, but the immigration line seemed to take forever.   Then we went on to customs.   I don't know if you would call it dumb luck or not, but we got into a very short line.  As it turned out, we were in the line for people returning to Jamaica.  My wife commented that we were the only Caucasians in the area.  There was only one family in front of us, so we waited until they were cleared and I asked the agent where we should be.  He kindly said that we were OK and he took our paperwork and we were through.  He told us where to go to find Super Clubs.  In no more than 15 minutes we were on our way.

The bus (van) ride was an adventure.  Others have described it well.  The road has no lane markings and they drive on the opposite side of the road.  I swear, it appears that if there could be a hazard in the road ahead, our driver stepped on the gas and beeped his horn.  I guess the theory must be that if you speed past the potential hazard, you will have passed it before it happens.  In what seemed like a very short 1 hour and 20 minutes we were in line to check in.

Having come from Minneapolis, we were dressed inappropriately.  We went to our room and changed into more appropriate cloths.  We ventured out exploring the resort as it was getting dusk.  We had a picture map that we didn't fully understand.  Before we knew it we were at the nude pool.  It was quite interesting when as we walked by the nude pool a couple was engaged in a very intimate act of PDA.  There was no mistaking what was going on from the sounds she was making.   We made it around the pool area and were on the boardwalk along the ocean, when the sky just opened up.  There wasn't time to run for cover.  We were drenched almost instantly.

It was a warm night and contrary to what we are accustomed to, the rain didn't make us cold.  However, the rain cleared most of the people out.  We had ducked into the Gazebo to take cover from the rain.  This is where we removed our wet clothes.  After the rain stopped we made out way to the nude pool.  The rain had sent nearly everyone for cover.  We swam for a short while. The water felt cool (down right cold) so we got out and entered the hot tub to warm up.  There were only a couple other people in around.  After we warmed up, we strolled down past the Gazebo and found a hammock.  You can use your imagination what happened in the hammock.  It was getting late and we were tired from a long and at times stressful day so we returned to our room.

Prior to our trip, my wife and I had read a trip report from someone who had experienced their first nude experience in the cover of darkness.   We had agreed this seemed like a good way to be introduced into being nude in public.  We are very glad it worked out like it did.

I had discovered the exercise room during our venture on the previous night and since the recommendation of my doctor, I wanted to keep up my exercise routine.  On our first morning, I got up early and headed to the exercise area while my wife slept.  I try to do a half hour of some form of exercise every day.  Returning to our room, my wife was still in bed.  We showered and went down for breakfast.  After breakfast, we looked at each other, asked each other what the other wanted to do, and decided the nude beach.

We got to the beach, took off our clothes, spread out towels on the lounges just like a duck takes to water.  Contrary to how difficult we thought it might be, it was very easy.  Being from the northern United States and areas of my body that were exposed had never seen sun, we only stayed in the sun until about 10:30 and then moved to the shade.  We stayed until about noon.  We put cover ups on, returned to our room to dress more appropriately for lunch.  After dinner we participated in a guided tour of the property, killed some time on our own looking around and about 3:00 PM headed for the nude area again.  The nude pool area was completely full, both of the piers were full, however, there were a few lounges at the nude beach.  It felt as good being nude this time as it had before.

Each day was about the same as the day before.  I would get up, exercise, come back to the room, we would go to breakfast and go to the nude beach.  Some days we would make it for lunch at the main dining area, other days we just at the nude beach.  We say our share of PDAs and participated in a couple of our own.  We have read about the sex police, however, there wasn't any evidence of their presence.  We didn't find it offensive and we were all grown adults and we could choose to look or not.  Daytime or darkness of night didn't seem to make any difference.

Some of the games didn't attract much participation and others were very active.  Body painting, rock painting, nude volleyball, and nude trivia seemed to attract participation.  About ½ of those at the nude area invaded the prude area with a nude waterslide run.  Nudes vs. prudes volleyball in the clothing optional pool began a little slow but eventually drew plenty of participants as did nudes vs. prudes in the sand volleyball game.

One night while waiting my turn at the waterslide (nude, of course), I witnessed a couple going at it in the glass bottom hot tub.  It was obvious what they were doing more that just hugging.  Anyway, I asked the attendant at the waterslide about the sex police and the activity which was going on just below us.  Contrary to what I had read in trip reports, this fellow said this goes on almost every night and often many times a night.  He said that they only stop overt PDAs in the open courtyard, at and near the main bar, and in the dining area.   All other areas, they just left people alone.

We did make a couple day trips.  We went shopping to Ocho Rios one day and another day we went to Dunn's River Falls.  Each of these trips was fun and we are glad we went.  They are probably not things we will do again, but I am sure we would always have wondered what they were if we hadn't.

We were a little apprehensive about being out of place after reading who was going while we were.  I entered our name on the DennyP visitor schedule.  We at 55 years old were, and not by any stretch of the imagination hard bodies, the oldest signed up.  After we arrived at the resort, we soon learned  we were not the oldest and not everyone was a hard body.

Another observation is the nude thing.  I learned it is much easier to strike up a conversation with a total stranger at a nude beach than at many other social settings.  Very often when I am in a setting where there are a lot of people and I try to strike up a conversation, I get a cold shoulder.  I soon learned at the nude area if you didn't start a conversation, someone will be starting one with you.  There were all types of people when we were there.  We met people from all across the United States, Canada, and other countries.  Several couples didn't speak English.  We met a couple of couples who got married while they were there.  We met couples who were there for the first time and others who had been to Hedo III several times.

The mix of people included primarily couples.  Nearly all the couples were in their 30s to 50s and even some in their 60s.  We did see a few single women and men who didn't seem to have partners.  There were no problems with any of them.

We talked to a young couple who had signed up for the Super Clubs surprise package and were planning on a trip in May.  They had made their reservations about 6 months before.  The surprise package offers quite a savings, however you cannot select which Super Club resort you will be going to.  You are notified which resort a week before your departure.  Anyway, possibly due to the excitement of their trip, they became pregnant and had to move the date of their trip up as not to interfere with the birth of their baby.  One week before they left, they learned they were going to HedoIII.  I can only admire them for continuing their trip plans.  They explained that it was one of their folks who suggested Super Clubs.  One set of parents had already been to HedoIII numerous times and grandma was babysitting the couples other children.

As the week progressed, my wife became much more comfortable with the nude thing.  At first she would ask me if I was thirsty and then she would have me get something for her if I was going to the bar.  As the week progressed, she even turned the tables on me and would get something for me if I wanted it.  It was fun not only to see other people, but fun to be seen.

The activities and entertainment were very much a part of the experience.  If you are interested in high class, sophisticated entertainment, you may be disappointed.  We really enjoyed the skits and acts put on by the native Jamaican's.  We also enjoyed the adult participation entertainment.  Battle of the sexes, wet T shirt, and Toga were hits with us.  We didn't see any of the PJ party as it rained earlier that evening.  We only left the resort two times for part of a day each time.  We were never bored.  It was unbelievable when we returned to our room and saw the dreaded eviction notice.  I mean, it really seemed like we just got there and now we had to leave.

One time while we were on the nude beach, there was a couple ladies who were together.  One was nude and the other had on a one-piece bathing suit.  My wife commented that if she wanted to be there she should not be wearing a suit.  A female security person walked over to her and spoke something to the lady who was dressed.  They were far enough away we couldn't hear the conversation, however, from the body language and gestures, the ladies were not buying what this security guard was telling them.  The security guard left without any changes.  A short time later a non-uniformed male came to talk to the ladies.  Again from the gestures, the ladies were not buying what he was telling them.  After a couple minutes, the lady with the suit on very grudgingly pulled her top down and proceeded to put suntan lotion on the newly exposed flesh.  Both my wife and I were glad they were enforcing this as a nude beach.  Through the course of the 7 days we were there, there were occasional ladies who didn't remove their bottoms.  It is interesting that it offended my wife more than me.

One day while leaving the nude beach and going to have lunch, we walked through the nude area and I counted the number of people.  I was unable to get an exact count as some were coming, some were leaving, and others were moving around.  I counted approximately 150 people,  most of them nude.  We walked toward the prude beach, putting on some clothes on the way.  We took a short detour and walked across the prude beach.  Heck, there wasn't anything going on here.  I only counted 30 people.  Only two in the water and no one involved in any kind of conversation.  One lady was laying nude, three others topless, and the rest either sunning or reading.  How boring!

How do we rate HedoIII?

The food: A person doesn't go to HedoIII for the food, however, I found most of it to be very good.  Some of it that I found not to my liking, was probably very good.  Being from the upper Midwest, I am a steak and potato person.  Jamaica is not known for steak.  Any meal always had more than enough good food to satisfy my hunger.  The New Years Eve food and party was just fabulous.

The drinks:  It was very difficult to get just a splash of alcohol.  Having experienced hangovers far more times than I care to admit and knowing they don't feel as good as they used to, I wanted to pace myself.  But then again it was easy as I always could poor ½ of the drink out and refill the glass with pop.

The room:  All I can say is that it was great.  Very nice room with a Jacuzzi tub.  CD player.  Television with Playboy.  Great view overlooking the quad pool.

The resort:  Very beautiful and very well kept up.   It seemed like there was always staff present tidying up some area.  Each day the beach was raked of seaweed, the hot tubs drained and refilled, the pools cleaned.

The staff:  Where do they get such a group of friendly people?  They are not working for tips, so why are they always smiling and very accommodating?  At anytime you could stop and talk with anyone.  Well maybe not the bartenders because they were so busy.

Will we be back?  The question is when will we be back?  We had a great time and cannot wait to come back.  We didn't have a single negative thing about out trip.   We are trying to decide if we can wait until the same time next year.  We can really see why Hedo resorts have the highest repeat customers of any resort.
