Doug & Rhonda's Breezes Golf and Beach Resort at Runaway Bay Report - 4/98

Doug and Rhonda's 4/12-4/20 trip to Breezes Golf and Beach Resort at Runaway Bay.

As soon as we discovered Rhonda was pregnant with our first child we decided to book a vacation for one last parentless fling. Unfortunately the only week we could go was Easter week and virtually all flights were booked. We managed to secure seats from New York to Mo Bay via U.S. Air with a stopover in Charlotte. Normally we fly American.

Sunday: The Cab picked us up at 6:00 A.M. for our 8:12 flight. The plane left on tine from Laguardia and the first flight was uneventful. The second flight from Charlotte was also uneventful. We arrived on time at Mo Bay at about 1:30 p.m., went through customs and immediately found the SuperClubs booth. Within minutes we were in the SuperClubs bus on our way to Breezes!

We arrived at Breezes at about 2:45. The Bus stopped at some tourist trap on the way for about 15 minutes. I could have done without this stop as I was anxious to get to the resort. Check in was quick and convenient. We were offered champagne but due to her condition Rhonda declined as did I. We were very quickly in our room where we unpacked, got changed and hit the pool. I was happy to see that my decision to go for the cheapest one was smart. Although the resort is large, none of the rooms are that far from everything. Our room was about equi-distant from the terrace/pool and the lobby/main building. It was VERY close to the tennis courts. The room itself was very nice but not opulent. It had plenty of space to store our clothes, a t.v. with cable stations, a phone and a c.d. player which we never used. It also had an alarm clock. When we got to the pool, I was hungry so I got some jerk chicken from the beach grill. Rhonda was suffering from a stomach virus so didn't eat anything. We didn't feel up to the welcome party at 5:30 but made the orientation at 6:30. This wasn't too useful and I think it can be skipped. After this we went back to the room, changed and went to dinner at the terrace buffet. There were a number of choices as well as a pasta station and a cold salad area. I was not impressed with the salads. I will not comment on the food for each day but I will say generally that the Buffet's were adequate sometimes even tasty but never excellent. I was more impressed with the food at Sandals Dunn's River and Club Med. Nevertheless, I did not pick this place for the food. That night we were kind of tired so we went to bed right after the show at about 11:00. I set the alarm clock for 8:00 and we hit the hay.

Monday: I woke the next morning to the sight of the alarm clock blinking 12:00 A.M. It seems the plug fell out overnight. It was actually about 9:30. For the rest of the time I left a wakeup call. The day was gorgeous but a bit windy. We quickly got dressed and had breakfast. Rhonda was still suffering from the virus so didn't really eat. After that we hung out at the pool. I played volleyball on the beach at 11:00 which was fun. At Watersports, the guy told us it was too windy to take out any of the hobby cats or for water-skiing. I saw people taking a scuba course. I might have done this as I've always wanted to be certified but as Rhonda is pregnant and couldn't do it, I thought I'd save it for next time. At Noon they held a swimsuit contest and gave out prizes for the best and most revealing swimsuits for women and the biggest chest expansion and beer belly for men. Neither of us participated. After a late lunch, we spent a little more time at the pool. At 3:00, Rhonda went for a scheduled facial and manicure and I went to play a little tennis. After that, seeing as how she wasn't due back until 6:00, I decided to check out the nude beach. Neither of us have ever done the au natural before and I was anxious to see what it was all about. It was about 5:00 and the beach was deserted. So I said what the hell and disrobed. It was a nice feeling. The beach itself was small and some had eroded due to a storm right before we got there. There were plenty of trees for shade as well. Shortly thereafter I realized there were people in the nude Jacuzzi so I headed up there. I entered and met 2 couples and later a third who showed up. I felt a little funny being there without Rhonda but everyone was nice. One of the couples told me they were getting married at Breezes the next day! I left and went back to meet Rhonda at 6:00. We had dinner and went to the show that night which was held in the terrace dining area. We were both tired so decided to skip the beach party and turn in. It seemed like fun though.

Tues.: Another perfect day. We got up at 8:00 and had breakfast. Afterwards we both went to take a tennis lesson. They had a visiting pro from a College in California and he was very cool. He ran fun drills for the medium sized group that was there and we became very hot. From there Rhonda and I went directly to the nude beach where we immediately disrobed, found appropriate chairs and spent the next half hour applying sunscreen to every square inch of our bodies. This day at this time there were about 10 people on the nude beach and we quickly broke the ice and got to know everybody. I was way over any embarrassment and was soon walking over to the self-serve bar with no shame whatsoever as were most others. As a point of interest I should note that the upper part of the nude beach is separated from the rest of the beach by shrubbery. The lower part of the beach near the water, however, is obviously not. So when we went in the water nude, we could be seen by anyone who cared to look. This didn't bother me. Another thing is that right to the left of the nude beach was the family resort FDR. because FDR stupidly doesn't have a beach of its own, Breezes allows FDR guests to walk right down its beach to the public beach on the other side of the resort. Thus, all day every day, we on the nude beach watched children, teenagers parents etc. walk right past us. Pretty funny. At 10:30 I pulled on my trunks and went to the volleyball court. No one showed up so the game was cancelled. I went back to the beach and sunbathed and swam until lunch. After lunch, Rhonda took an arts and crafts class and I went back to the nude beach until 4:00 when I went to play in the singles tennis tournament. The wind was really bad and I sucked. I was so achy that I headed over to the hot tub again. This time I was the only guy there while in the tub were four gals. 3 of them I had seen on the nude beach and now I took the time to introduce myself. The 4th was married but said her husband was too prudish to go in the tub. A little while later a couple of guys showed up and we all enjoyed some good conversation until I had to leave. Unfortunately I put on the wrong guy's suit but didn't realize it until I got back to the room. We switched back and everyone had a good laugh over that for days. In my defense it was dark and both suits were purple and size small. We had dinner and watched the show but decided to skip the pajama party because it didn't start until 11:30 and was in the noisy disco which we are not into.

Wednesday:

After breakfast I went to tennis until 10:00. Rhonda did morning arts and crafts and I grabbed some snorkeling equipment and went over to the nude beach. It just so happens that off the nude beach is an excellent coral reef. I had the first time experience of snorkeling nude which was pretty neat. Unfortunately, I lost my wedding ring in the reef when it slid off my finger. It's now sunken treasure. I spent the rest of the morning sunbathing au natural. Rhonda showed up about 11:30 and joined me. Today there were about 15 people on the beach here. Still pretty cozy. The sun was hot and strong and we both got plenty of sun in spite of the sunscreen we were constantly applying. After lunch Rhonda napped while I again hung out at the nude beach. Later in the day at 3:00 I tried the trampoline but didn't like it. At 4:00 I went to play some afternoon tennis and afterwards I again hung in the hot tub. We had dinner at Martinos but were not at all impressed and did not return. After dinner we participated in casino night but couldn't get enough chips to bid for a prize. we saw the show but again decided to skip the toga party and instead hung out at the piano bar.

Thursday:

Again played tennis until 10:00, went to the nude beach again and went snorkeling again. Rhonda did more arts and crafts and then met me at the beach. I saw a stingray and thought I saw a shark but it wasn't. After lunch Rhonda napped and I sunned for another hour at which point I went to afternoon tennis. I played almost 2 hours and thought I was going to die. Instead I rejuvenated in the hot tub which was deserted except for us. At dinner we watched an excellent circus show in which guests performed as well. It was pretty amazing watching a gal who arrived with us doing flying trapeze. After that night's show they had karaoke at the piano bar. Few had the guts to perform but Rhonda and I each did 2 songs. I did "When I Die" by Blood Sweat and Tears and Rainy Day Women (Everybody Must get Stoned) by Bob Dylan. This seemed popular. Afterwards we were recruited for Friday's staff/guest talent show.

Friday:

Tennis in the morning then snorkeling and sunning at the nude beach. It was another perfect day and we were both getting quite an all-around tan. After lunch Rhonda slept while I got some more sun. At 3:00 we went on a horse and carriage ride which was o.k., not great. At 4:00 I played in the Doubles tournament and won first prize ( a teeshirt). After that I desperately needed the hot tub but at 5:30 it was off to rehearsal for the show. After that we went back to the hot tub for a while and then changed for Dinner. After dinner was the show where I sang "Like A Rolling Stone" and Rhonda Sang "I Will Survive" We both went over big and got compliments galore. Only a total of 6 guests performed for the show. The staff part of the show was quite funny as well.

Saturday

I took off tennis and decided to spend the whole beautiful day on the beach. My various activities consisted of nude sunbathing, nude snorkeling and (clothed) volleyball. That night we met a new couple in the hot tub who had just gotten there. They seemed surprised when we got in as if they thought it would be all there's. I told them of the nude beach and the gal said she'd like to try it but was shy. I don't know if she did or not but I didn't see them there on our last day.

Sunday

More of the same. Took a morning tennis class. Played volleyball, sunbathed and snorkeled. Rhonda did arts and crafts. After lunch was more nude sunbathing. This time the beach was jammed. There were probably close to 30 people there. The water by the coral was so crowded with nude and clothed swimmers, some guy (dressed) swam right into me. There were also children hanging about ( presumably they were from FDR) I was not about to get modest now. I figure its there parents job to keep them away from nude beaches. In the evening we enjoyed the hot tub again and played another couple 2 sets of doubles after dark. We had one last dinner and went to the show. Then we hung in the hot tub at midnight for another couple of hours before reluctantly turning in on our last night.

Monday

Totally depressed to be going home, the flight home was fine and we got home just on time.

Overall I had a terrific time. I had never gone to a nude beach before but now can't imagine going to a resort without one. I recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a good time. There are tons of included activities I never even got around to plus tons of planned stuff such as games and races. I did find the guest to be a little apathetic but then again I was too with a few exceptions. The lure of the nude beach was too great. We would go back here but are considering Hedonism for a future trip. I talked to a couple of other first time nudists and they also said they were considering a trip to Hedonism. The nudity here was quite subdued. No overt sexuality at all. Quite placid in fact. Please feel free to contact me for further info.
